Gough’s solution was revolutionary: a simple nylon strip with a ratcheting mechanism that could bundle wires quickly and securely, without the need for tying knots.

This first design was called the Ty-Rap—a name still recognized in the industry today.

2. How the Original Cable Tie Worked

Gough’s original cable tie design included:

  • A ribbed nylon strap that could grip tightly without slipping.
  • A built-in ratchet head that locked the strap in place when inserted.
  • A one-time use mechanism, ensuring a secure hold without the risk of loosening.
